Jeremiah 2

Jer 2: 36 Why do you go about so much,
changing your ways?
You will be disappointed by Egypt
as you were by Assyria.

37 You will also leave that place
with your hands on your head,
for the LORD has rejected those you trust;
you will not be helped by them.

The main theme of Jeremiah is the breaking of covenant; and the fault lies with the people, not God. "It is Judah who has been untrue to the covenant . They commited religious sin and that of social justice. The Lord cannot be deceived; no bulwark will suffice against him(36b); he will indeed punish his wayward people (35b;37)"

Who do you put your trust in? in the Eqypts and Assyrias? if there is anything the economic crisis is teaching us, it is that we put our trust in the wrong places. And God sometimes had to tear it down to teach us a lesson.

Have i put my trust in the wrong things? maybe in the past. i have been reflecting about beauty, power and wealth. and none of these things will overcome death. death itself will prove the substance of these strongholds. Many ppl, including christians lust after relationships, seek significance in power and status, go after wealth. God's patience towards them is to hopefully turn them back to Him.

it is very easy to teach someone not to put their trust in the wrong place, and start to make a list of dos-and donts ; however, these list of dos and donts will only lead to something we know as legalism. Unless the heart is tuned towards God and his purposes, anything else is still a fake religion.

lately i learned that sin is a domain. something outside of us that grips us and lead us to walk into it. but to turn away from it requires an intervention from outside, ie God's power.

in jeremiah, i learn that the reason why i placed my trust in God is becuase he has the power to protect me against any political advances. Jeremiah is prohecizing against not just the enemies, but from within- the false prophets.
